Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino

was born at Boscoreale, near Naples and Pompei, on May 16, 1948. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Nola on 24 June 1972, having studied at the Almo Collegio Capranica in Rome. He obtained a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in Political Science from the La Sapienza University in Rome. After a period in his home diocese as parochial assistant and pastor, he was appointed to diocesan responsibilities for catechetics. Father Sorrentino also became a teacher in the Institute of Religious Science at Nola and in the theological faculty at Naples. In 1992, he was released by the Diocese of Nola to serve in the Italian Section of the Secretariat of State in the Holy See, where he served the future Saint John Paul II.

On February 17, 2001, Monsignor Sorrentino was appointed as Prelate of Pompei with the title of Archbishop, where he was largely involved in the pastoral ministry and administration of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. 

Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop Sorrentino Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Vatican City State, on August 2, 2003. On 19 November 2005, Pope Benedict XVI transferred the Archbishop to the Diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino, where he continues to serve.

Archbishop Sorrentino has lectured widely and written a number of articles and books, the most recent in May 2020, "Crisi come Grazia: Per una nuova Primavera nella Chiesa" ("Crisis as Grace: For a New Springtime of the Church”).
